On Sunday, April 9th, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, the Poetry Zone at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum in Santa Barbara will be hosting Jan Steckel and Steve Braff, followed by an open mike.
Jan Steckel is a former pediatrician who left the practice of medicine because of chronic pain. Her poetry book The Horizontal Poet (Zeitgeist Press, 2011) won a 2012 Lambda Literary Award for Bisexual Nonfiction. Her chapbooks Mixing Tracks (Gertrude Press, 2009) and The Underwater Hospital (Zeitgeist Press, 2006) also won awards for LGBT writing. Her creative writing has appeared in Scholastic Magazine, Yale Medicine, Bellevue Literary Review, BiMagazine, Red Rock Review and elsewhere. She will read from both published and new manuscript collections.
Steve Braff’s poetry has been published in Tea House, Muryoko Journal of Shin Buddhism, Muscogee Nation News, Cholla Needles Magazine, and selected for publication in Nomad’s Choir forthcoming 2017 and 2018 issues. Steve is co-founder of the Santa Ynez Valley Poetry Workgroup and is Poetry Chair of the Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association. Steve will be reading selections from his chapbook, Forty Days (Cholla Needles Press, 2017) – a collection of short poems inspired by photographs of Joshua Tree, California.
